WebDec 20, 2006 · The Baraboo Quartzite is a 1.7 billion year old, almost pure meta-quartzarenite unit that is 1500 m thick and that crops out in a doubly-plunging syncline in south-central Wisconsin, U.S.A. It is one of several similar quartzites that are exposed throughout the upper part of the Midwestern United States. WebQuartzite in the Baraboo syncline is interpreted to have recrystallized at a depth of ~10 km and at temperatures near 350 °C (Craddock and McKiernan, 2007; Czeck and Ormand, 2007). Fold axes are oriented ENE-WSW, for which finite strain analyses have documented NW-SE tectonic shortening (Craddock and McKiernan, 2007).
